When wandering the baby care aisles at Target or Walmart looking for soap or diapering cream, do you often ask yourself if the products in front of you are 100% safe for your baby?
If that is the case, you are totally right!
Even if we could assume that all baby products are safe, it is unfortunately not the case.
Let’s take a closer look!
5 nasty ingredients to avoid in baby care products
1- Talc
Talc, despite coming from a natural mineral source, can be contaminated by asbestos. Studies have proven that asbestos is carcinogen and that it can travel inside the body if used on the genitals.Â
2- Artificial fragrances
95% of artificial fragrances ingredients are derived from petrochemicals which are known to cause severe dermatitis or allergic reactions. They are known to also be hormonal disruptors.
3- Sodium benzoate
Sodium benzoate is often used as an antimicrobial agent. When mixed with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it can produce benzene, which is known as carcinogen.
4- SLS Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
SLS naturally derives from coconut oil. It is supposedly harmless, but the manufacturing process through ethoxylation involves the use of a byproduct that can cause eye and skin irritations.
5- Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol is a type of alcohol that is used in some moisturizers and sunscreens because of its skin-softening properties. Because of its petroleum base, it can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. It is then better to look for vegetable-based propylene glycol.
Products for which it’s better to read the label
Babies have such a delicate skin that it is important to read the labels before buying to make sure it is safe.
The main products to pay attention to are the following:
- Soap and bubble bath,
- Diapering care,
- Body lotion,
- Sunscreen,
- Mosquito repellent,
- Laundry detergent and stain remover,
- Dish soap,
- Household cleaning products.
A few apps are also available to help you identify which products are safe and which are not.
For example, EWG or Think Dirty app will provide you with the safest choices out there.
You can download them on your phone and directly check the products while shopping.
